Uganda, Kampala- Opposition legislators have started their nationwide campaign to mobilise Ugandans against the proposed scrapping of the presidential age limit. Speaking during their first meeting in Kawempe division in Kampala on Monday, the Leader of the Opposition, Winnie Kiiza, asked Ugandans to support their efforts against the proposed amendment.
“You should resist this amendment that seeks to introduce life presidency,” she said.
Kiiza explained article 102 (B) is the only remaining safeguard against life presidency in Uganda. Article 102 (b) caps the president’s age at 75 years.
President Yoweri Museveni who has ruled Uganda for 31 years is pushing for the amendment to extend his stay in power once he clocks the 75 year age limit.
Raphael Magyezi, the Igara West MP and a member of Museveni’s ruling National Resistance Movement party has already tabled a private member’s bill in parliament seeking to scrap the age limit. However, Kiiza says they are willing to do all it takes to stop the move.
