Uganda’s Main Opposition FDC Gets New President


Dr. Patrick Amuriat Oboi is the new president of Uganda’s main opposition party Forum for Democratic Change-FDC. Amuriat garnered 682 votes to defeat the incumbent, General Gregory Mugisha Muntu in a hotly contested election held at Namboole stadium on Friday night.

Amuriat takes over from Muntu who replaced FDC’s founding president Colonel Dr. Kizza Besigye. Prior to contesting for the FDC presidency Amuriat served as the Kumi county MP.

He lost in the 2016 polls and decided to run for the leadership of his party. He won the support of FDC big wigs including Dr. Kizza Besigye, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the FDC General secretary, Ingrid Turinawe , the FDC women league chairperson.

During his campaigns Amuriat ran in trouble with police and was thrown in the cells on numerous occasions.
