Court in the Western Uganda district in Mbarara has remanded Prince Umar Asiimwe Rubambansi, the claimant of the Ankole crown and his four cabinet ministers. The ministers are Max Muhumuza, Joseph Kankiriho, Brenda Katushemerirwe and Wycliff Amanya.
The five appeared before the Mbarara Grade One magistrate, Sanyu Mukasa on Tuesday for inciting violence, promoting sectarianism and impersonation. The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges and attempted to apply for bail.
The State Attorney, Caroline Kesubi opposed the bail application, saying the suspects face serious charges, which need thorough investigations.
The Mbarara Grade One magistrate, Sanyu Mukasa rejected the bail application on the grounds that the state need more time to investigate the matter and that the surities presented by the suspects were non residents, which would make it difficult for to ensure the suspects appear in court when needed.
She therefore remanded the accused to Kyamugonranyi government until February 27th, 2018 when the matter will come up.
Rubambansi and his group were picked up his palace at Itaaba in Rwampara, Mbarara district, where he has been operating as the Ankole King since 2016. He ignored several directives by government to close the palace, saying he is the heir apparent to the throne of his late father Ntare V, the former Ankole king.
