Eye Infection Still Major Threat to Blindness

A report by International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness warns that, global rates of avoidable blindness are set to increase threefold in the next four decades, while countries from South Asia and Sub Saharan Africa are feared to be most at risk.

The research that was published in the Lancet Global Health journal identifies cataracts, glaucoma and untreated case of blurred vision as some of the leading causes of blindness. Whilst higher income countries are showing progress, less developed regions like Sub-Saharan Africa do not seem to be keeping up due to lack of resources. The data highlights the need for a massive increase in eye care provision.
