His Highness, the Aga Khan, the Spiritual leader of the Shia Imam Ismailia Muslim Community has received the “Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa The Grand Master” award from Uganda. President, Yoweri Museveni decorated Aga Khan during celebrations to commemorate Uganda’s 55 independence anniversary in Bushenyi district on Monday October 9th, 2017.
Speaking shortly before Aga Khan was decorated, General Ely Tumwine, the Chairman of the Awards Committee, said Uganda decided to award Aga Khan in recognition of his contributions to Uganda through the Aga Khan Development Network. He explained that Aga Khan has invested in several sectors in the country including the hotel industry, health, electricity generation, education and media among others.
Some of the major investments owned by Aga Khan in Uganda include Serena Hotels, Aga Khan University, The Daily Monitor, KFM and Dembe FM, Nation TV, Aga Khan Schools, Bujagali Energy Limited, Diamond Trust Bank, Kampala Pharmaceutical Industries and Aga Khan Hospital among others.
The other recipients of this medal are President, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, former Tanzanian President, Mwirisho Jakaya Kikwete and Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
