Two thousand mine workers have been laid off at Bulyanhulu Gold Mine as part of Acacia’s cost cutting drive. Out of the two thousand workers laid off by Acacia mining, one thousand and two hundred were directly employed at Bulyanhulu mine, while the eight hundred are from the companies that have been providing different services at the mine.
The retrenchment is a result of the mine’s decision to scale down operations after adopting an alternative method of processing gold at the facility. This comes after the government’s ban on exports of metallic concentrates. Acacia now start using cyanide to process gold.
